  金斯利先生关掉了排练室里所有的灯，室内一扇窗户都没有，瞬间一片漆黑。他们就这样，置身于漆黑密闭的穹顶之下。矩形房间的一端是舞台，大约三十英寸高。灯光熄灭，绝对的寂静中，他们听见金斯利先生沿着对面的墙壁走上舞台，他们隐约可以看见舞台的边缘，那里粘着一段一段的发光胶带，反射出像星座一样的微光。很久以后，他们的眼睛才慢慢适应黑暗，像在子宫中，又像在墓穴里。舞台上传来金斯利先生严厉而平静的声音，将他们之前的时间全部清零，将他们所有的知识统统抹去。他们像新生婴儿一样，眼睛还未张开，只好在黑暗中摸索前行，看看究竟能有何所获。爬行，将会使他们避免受伤，也会让他们远离舞台，金斯利先生坐在那里聆听他们的声音。他们也认真地聆听着：听觉既被黑暗阻碍，又因黑暗释放；黑暗中他们得以隐藏自己，冒险潜行。一些地方有挪动身体的声音，还有哪里在沙沙作响，声音陆续传来，打破了沉寂。房间并不大，不一会儿，有的身体碰撞到一起，又慌忙分开。这些是金斯利先生听见的，也可能是他假想的：“黑暗中，还有别的生物在我身边吗？”他小声道，替他们把心中的恐惧讲了出来，“这个生物是什么样子，‘我’又是什么样子？让我行走的四肢、脊背、感受冷暖的皮肤，粗糙而光滑。‘它’是谁？‘我’是谁？‘我们’是谁？”
